Space Junk 3D (2012)
 
(Release Date: September 17, 2013) - Initially made for theatrical IMAX exhibition, Image and RLJ Entertainment's short-form documentary about the debris lingering just outside the earth's atmosphere is a tad too streamlined to be anything more than a 38-minute time waster. With that being said, the film, narrated by Tom Wilkinson, is certainly an interesting watch as it covers the threat of meteors, takes the viewer to a real-life crater, and talks about the man-made materials that have been collected from space shuttles over the last half-century and eventually may make a ring around the planet's orbit. A mix of CG animation and live-action interludes with experts such as Don Kessler, the so-called "Father of Space Junk," help to put context to the subject matter. A deeper exploration, however, will have to wait.

Released to Blu-ray with the option to be viewed in 3D or 2D, the 1080p, 1.78:1 video transfer of "Space Junk 3D" is gorgeous—with just a few minor debits. First, there is a bit of noticeable shimmer to the surface of the image during a few aerial shots. Second, there is also some judder happening—a jerky motion during the occasional panning of the camera. Otherwise, this is top-of-the-line stuff. Yes, some of the effects are questionable, but the visual clarity of the image is such that one might be tempted to try to reach out and enter the television. The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 sound mix is unassuming but effectively serves its purpose. Viewers won't be blown off their seat, but the material does not call for those kinds of aural fireworks. The lossless audio does its job, and does it well.

"Space Junk 3D" is worth checking out for anyone who is actively seeking more product to use with their 3D televisions, or anyone who simply is fascinated by the topic at hand. At an SRP of $24.98, the film is not nearly long enough to warrant paying this price, but when the title goes on sale those who are intrigued should jump on it. It looks great and sounds fine, so there are really no other drawbacks for those on the fence.
